Rock’s Not Dead News: Foo Fighters, Godsmack + Watch Arcade Fire Steal Fans’ Phones

Does it feel like the music world is obsessed with “Fancy” rapper Iggy Azalea? Or like the four horsemen of the apocalypse are named 5 Seconds of Summer? When even the guitar-spinning frontmen of ZZ Top are teaming up with electronic dance king David Guetta (true!), it’s easy to think that rock has one foot planted in Tommy Ramone’s grave. But fear not, rock fans, rock’s not dead yet. Here’s proof:
1) On Monday, veteran axe men the Foo Fighters announced details of their upcoming album, Sonic Highways, due out Nov. 10. The band explored 8 different U.S. cities (Chicago, Austin, Nashville, Los Angeles, Seattle, New Orleans, Washington, D.C., and New York) and recorded a new song in each. There are even going to be 8 different album cover photos. Cooler still, you can see their sessions in Dave Grohl’s new HBO show of the same name, “Sonic Highways,” debuting Oct. 17.
2) Who ruled the best-selling album charts last week? No, not Pitbull. It was a 63-year-old rocker named Tom Petty. Petty’s new Hypnotic Eye album sold 131,000 copies in the week ending Aug. 3, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Rolling Stone calls Hypnotic Eye the “toughest, most straight-up rocking record in many years,” and it’s the best debut for the toothy troubadour since 1994’s Wildflowers, the album with “You Don’t Know How It Feels” and “You Wreck Me,” which sold 161,000.
3) Boston rockers Godsmack just landed No. 3 on the Billboard 200 chart with their new album: 1000hp. Out this week, the music video for the single “1000hp” is a gloriously high-octane rocker featuring retro concert footage and vehicles blowing up and going really fast. Watch here:

4) In the funniest “rock-lives” news, Arcade Fire frontman Win Butler stole L.A. concertgoers’ cellphones last week while singing a cover of “Been Caught Stealing.” The band has been covering various classic rock anthems, including Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and Guns N’ Roses “Welcome to the Jungle,” on tour. If you’re a Guns N’ Roses fan, you’ll also be glad to hear that Axl Rose says the band has two, new full albums ready to roll, a sequel to Chinese Democracy and a remix. Release dates are still to come.
