Dave Grohl, Pat Smear and Krist Novoselic could have picked anyone to sing Nirvana’s hallowed hits at their onstage reunion last week, but minds were vaporized when they chose 4 female singers to do the honors.
Joan Jett, Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth), Annie Clark (St. Vincent) and Lorde each took the stage at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony in Brooklyn to belt out Kurt Cobain‘s tortured lyrics. The concert was held to celebrate Nirvana‘s much-deserved induction into the Hall of Fame.
It was kind of a genius move, really, satisfying the old rock guard as well as hopefully luring in a new generation of teen grungers. Joan sang “Smells Like Teen Spirit”; Kim got “Aneurysm”; Annie crushed “Lithium” and Lorde closed with “All Apologies.”
Explaining the choice, bassist Novoselic blogged, “Joan and Kim are matriarchs of Punk Rock, while St. Vincent and Lorde represent the powerful up-and-coming women.”
So how’d they do? The ceremony will air May 31 on HBO. But here’s a sneak peek. Watch Lorde sing “All Apologies” …
