TLC, Diddy & Mase, and DJ Kool Herc Reunite As Hip-Hop Turns 40

“Yo, I thought I told you that we won’t stop,” … Notorious B.I.G. featuring Diddy & Mase

Hip-Hop may be 40 this weekend but it still looks dope in its Tommy rugbies and Timberlands. Sho nuff, 40 years ago on August 11, 1973, the godfather of hip-hop, better known as DJ Kool Herc, introduced his breakbeat style of MCing at a house party in the Bronx.

This Saturday, August 10, Herc’s taking the stage again with rappers Coke La Rock, Roxanne Shante, Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, DJ Premier, Grand Master Theodore and more as part of New York’s free SummerStage concert series (3 p.m. at the Rumsey Playfield in Central Park, NYC).

But what’s this? Looks like Toronto dropped the mic first. At his 4th annual OVO Fest at Molson Amphitheatre last week in Toronto, Drizzy “Drake” unleashed a posse of phenomenal performers, including Miguel, J. Cole, Big Sean, A$AP Rocky, French Montana, Wale, Lil Mama, Kanye West and his mentor, Lil Wayne. But perhaps the biggest throwdowns of the night were performances by girl group TLC and former duo Diddy and Mase.

Wearing sleeveless tops that exposed their chiseled arms, T-Boz and Chilli performed “Waterfall” and their famous girl anthem “No Scrubs.” (Third member Left-Eye Lopes died in a car crash in 2002 but her recorded raps were kept intact while dancers performed.)

Later, heralded by explosions, surprise guest Diddy emerged and yelled, “Toronto, this is something that has never happened. Get your cameras out!” before Mase rolled out to join him for their Bad Boy hits with Notorious B.I.G. “Feel So Good” and “Mo Money Mo Problems.”
