Top 5 U.S. Summer Music Festivals 2013

Coachella 2013’s sweaty two-weekend launch in a Southern California polo field officially kicked off this year’s summer music festival season.

While it didn’t boast a Tupac Shakur hologram or even a much-rumored cameo by electronic dance music faves Daft Punk, this year’s Coachella still delivered. The trippy music marathon featured rhythmic shows by 60 performers such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Baauer, Blur, British electro-pop unit Disclosure, the Stone Roses, and Phoenix.

There was even a Wu Tang Clan reunion, a new EDM tent featuring Bassnectar, and a musical collaboration by Fall Out Boy and 2 Chainz. So where were the helmet-wearing lads of Daft Punk? Brooklyn apparently. Phoenix’s ultra-hyped surprise guest turned out to be crooner R. Kelly instead.

Despite that, the most viral video to come out of Coachella is a Jimmy Kimmel stunt mocking hipsters who pretend to know made-up bands like “The Chelsea Clintons” (see bottom of post). But for music fans, there’s still plenty of “authentic,” live concert fun coming up around the country.

Here are 5 of this summer’s best U.S. summer music festivals with some of their headliners. (Europe’s top 5 to come in an upcoming post.) So grab your body paint and check out:
