Austin’s annual barbecue and music brouhaha, South by Southwest 2013, is happening this week, and MyMusicCloud has your 3-minute highlights.
Rocker Dave Grohl delivered the music festival’s keynote speech, an honor previously held by legends like Bruce Springsteen, and in it, the Foo Fighters frontman dropped about 40 f-bombs, reflected on Nirvana bandmate Kurt Cobain’s death (“I was lost”) and declared: “‘Gangnam Style’ is one of my favorite effing songs of the last decade.”
Sick, tight, epic? Whatever music superlatives you prefer, the list of bands playing SXSW is all of those, including Brit band Alt-J, Camera Obscura, the newly sober Green Day, cult favorites Haim, rapper Kendrick Lamar, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Smashing Pumpkins, Snoop Lion, Tegan and Sara, Iggy and the Stooges, Vampire Weekend and more. A hooded guy from the ‘80s (Prince, is it?) also announced he’s bringing the funk to SXSW on March 16.
But fueling much of the pandemonium at SXSW 2013 is Justin Timberlake’s retooled, artist-launching pad, MySpace, which has been hosting surprise, free concerts all week showcasing musicians like Flying Lotus, Kid Cudi, and Sleigh Bells.
For those of us not enjoying rhymes and ribs in Austin, here are 5 bands to add to your MyMusicCloud playlist and enjoy on your phone, tablet or any other device:
Icona Pop: For the ladies, this Swedish synth-pop duo is behind that pivotal dance floor scene in HBO’s trend-setting “Girls.”
Fear of Men: U.K. band for those who enjoyed the jangly ditties of the Cranberries.
Fakuta: Chill out with Chilean Pamela Sepúlveda’s brand of dreamy space pop.
Kosha Dillz: This mad-skilled L.A. rapper kicks rhymes Hebrew style, yo.
Sleigh Bells: Grinding guitars and breathy female vocals packaged in a sexy Tarantino-esque duo.
