Five 2012 Movie Soundtracks That Pop and Rock

It was a pleasant surprise to see pop stars like Adele and Taylor Swift at the Golden Globes Awards last weekend and not just because they love to hog the red carpet. Both singers were nominated for Best Original Song (Adele won for “Skyfall” over Taylor’s “Safe & Sound”).

Movie awards season is in full swing which means movie soundtracks are getting a lot of attention.  Life of Pi won Best Original Score at the Globes and is nominated for an Oscar. Also up for musical Oscars are Anna Karenina, Argo, Lincoln and Skyfall.  Alexandre Desplat’s Zero Dark Thirty score is also garnering critical praise and so is the star-studded new soundtrack for Les Miserables. (Hugh Jackman sings!)

But even if you’re not an opera or James Bond fan, there’s a lot of noteworthy pop, hip-hop and rock soundtracks to explore and download with our cloud-based music delivery service. Here are 5 worth listening to:

The Avengers – The superhero mashup features grunge tracks from Soundgarden, Scott Weiland, and more ‘90s rockers.

The Hunger Games – Taylor’s afore-mentioned folk duo with The Civil Wars was nominated for a Globe, Maroon 5’s Adam Levine makes a cameo, Arcade Fire plays two tracks and even Kid Cudi steps in with “The Ruler and the Killer.”

Katy Perry: Part of Me –The Teenage Dream’s movie companion CD features cotton candy favorites like “Firework,” “Last Friday Night,” and “Wide Awake.”

The Man with the Iron Fists — Edgy alt bands like The Black Keys go up against rappers Kanye West, Wiz Khalifa and RZA, who also directs and stars in this martial arts pic.

Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2 – Passion Pit and Christina Perri join rockers like Green Day (“The Forgotten”) and electronica sensation Ellie Goulding (“Bittersweet”).
