Get ready for an ear-tastic explosion of music Friday when the 2012 Summer Olympics kick off in London and are broadcast around the world. Olympic mix-masters say they’ve compiled 2,012 songs to play over the two-week course of the Games. Eighty-six of those will just be for the splashy opening ceremony, a mashup of iconic British songs from the Sex Pistols to Adele called “A Symphony of British Music” played against an English countryside backdrop.

MyMusicCloud invites you to get in on the fun by earmarking your favorite songs and making your own Olympic music power playlist. Download them from our music store (search 11 million songs) or upload your own recordings to our cloud-based music storage and delivery system from your private collection.

Wondering where to start? How about some of the bands the Olympic athletes are listening to?

U.S. women’s soccer star Hope Solo tells Self magazine her favorite pump-up song is “Ragged Mile” by the John Butler Trio. Sixteen-time U.S. swimming medalist Michael Phelps says he gets pumped to Afrojack, Avicii, and Skrillex. His teammate Ryan Lochte prefers Lil Wayne and Jay-Z. U.S. teen gymnasts McKayla Maroney and Jordyn Wieber adore Justin Bieber, while Gabby Douglas rocks out to Beyoncé and Rihanna. And if soccer sensation Neymar De Silva scores a goal for Brazil, expect to hear singer Michel Telo’s “Ai Se Eu Te Pego!” fill the stadium. (It translates into “Oh, If I Catch You!” in English.)

As we mentioned earlier this month, official Olympics theme songs have also been recorded by Muse, Elton John vs. Pnau, Delphic, electronic gurus the Chemical Brothers, and rapper Dizzee Rascal. At the Games themselves, the Scissor Sisters and Rizzle Kicks will play surprise gigs for spectators, and Blur, New Order and The Specials will rock out at the closing ceremony on August 12. So show your national pride and rock out with the jocks this Olympics season!

Funny how we can make tiny mobile phones you can open your car with and carry your whole music collection on, but when it comes to the weather? We still can’t make it rain. Twenty-nine states are being battered by a drought that’s wilting precious crops, threatening livestock and making farmers miserable.

“If I had a rain prayer or a rain dance I could do, I would do it,” U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack told reporters this week.

We don’t have a rain dance but here at MyMusicCloud we’re doing our part to help end the drought by compiling a rain-summoning music mix.  Our precipitation playlist spans genres from Adele’s groovy “Right as Rain” to Garbage’s fantastically moody “Only Happy When It Rains.” And, of course, we couldn’t forget Marc Anthony and Pit Bull’s “Rain Over Me” or country star Luke Bryan’s “Rain Is a Good Thing.”

So do your part for the farmers by downloading these songs with our cloud-based music delivery service, or searching our music library of 11 million songs for your own favorite tracks. Listen to them uninterrupted at home, in the car or on your mobile phone or tablet. Even make up your own rain dance if you want. We won’t laugh. (Well, maybe a little.)

10. “Rain” (Mika)

9. “Rain on Me” (Ashanti)

8. “Rain Over Me” (Pitbull featuring Marc Anthony)

7. “Listen to the Rain” (Enya)

6. “Here Comes the Rain Again” (Eurythmics)

5. “Right as Rain” (Adele)

4. “Only Happy When it Rains” (Garbage)

3. “Purple Rain” (Prince)

2. “November Rain” (Guns & Roses)

Ever notice some of the crazy things guys will say to meet girls? For a taste, look no further than your MP3 player, because there are plenty of comical pick-up lines in music. From The Beatles’ quaint, “I wanna hold your hand,” to the Cataracs’ questionable, “Your daddy must have been a drug dealer, Why? – ‘Cause you dope,” some of the sweetest, and silliest, come-on lines have emerged from the lips of singers.

Here at MyMusicCloud, we spend a lot of time thinking about music. Not just about how to make it easier for you to store your music library on our cloud-based music delivery service and sync it across any Mac, PC, tablet or mobile phone so you can listen to it on- or off-line wherever you go.

But we also love to come up with ways to make music more fun and shareable – like our “Lyrics” function, which lets you instantly see the words to all of your favorite songs with the touch of a button. That’s how we came up with this recent post on the 10 Funniest Misheard Lyrics. And now, we’re counting down 10 of the Best Pick-Up Line Songs from Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe” to more obscure tracks like The Bloodhound Gang’s ridiculous 1999 hit “The Bad Touch.” (Hint: Think mammals.)

When it comes to charming the ladies, sometimes the straight approach works, but as the late Notorious B.I.G. observed, “Most of these fellas think they be mackin’, but they be actin’, who they attractin’ with that line, ‘What’s your name, what’s your sign?’”

Sometimes, a more creative approach works. Tell us in the comments section if these lyrics make you chuckle, and share some of your own best and worst musical pick-up lines with us!

10. “Hey, I just met you, and this is crazy, but can I get your number, and call you maybe?” Carly Rae Jepsen (“Call Me Maybe”)

9. “Is it cool if I hold your hand? Is it wrong if I think it’s lame to dance? Do you like my stupid hair? Would you guess that I didn’t know what to wear?” Blink 182 (“First Date”)

8. “Since we in the club for now, for now, Might as well get another round, round, Notice there ain’t nothing in your cup, So get here, baby, let me fill it up, fill it up” Trey Songz (“Say Aah”)

7. “Somebody told me that you had a boyfriend that looked like a girlfriend that I had in February of last year,” The Killers (“Somebody Told Me”)

6. “Hey, yo, fat girl, C’mere – are ya ticklish?” The Digital Underground (“The Humpty Dance”)

5. “You may be right, I may be crazy, but it just may be a lunatic you’re looking for,” Billy Joel (“You May Be Right”)

4. “You and me, baby, ain’t nothing but mammals, so let’s do it like they do it on the Discovery Channel,” The Bloodhound Gang (“The Bad Touch”)

3. “Hey, girl, hey, where ya goin’? Come back and sit back down, You look too good to be heading home so early now, You say you gotta work tomorrow, Got a lot on your mind, Let me buy another round, Girl, I think you and I should just drink on it,” Blake Shelton (“Drink on It”)

2. “Hey, hey, you, you, I don’t like your girlfriend, No way, no way, I think you need a new one! Hey, hey, you, you, I could be your girlfriend,” Avril Lavigne (“Girlfriend”)

1. “I’d like to walk you through a field of wildflowers, I’d like to check you for ticks,” Brad Paisley (“Ticks”)

The 2012 Summer Olympic Games arrive with an unexpected windfall for pop, rock and electronic music fans. As in previous years, several artists have been recruited to record official Olympic songs before the games kick off July 27 in London. But this year, many of the performers are top pop and dance acts from the U.K., the host country, and will unveil their tributes over the upcoming weeks.

First up are chart-topping alt-rockers Muse, who just released their epic Olympic ballad, “Survival,” last week. Check out Muse on MyMusicCloud.

Next up are Elton John and Australian electronic-dance duo Pnau, who John tapped to remix many of his hits (including “Benny and the Jets,” “Madman Across the Water” and “Philadelphia Freedom”) into a fresh, dance-friendly album called Good Morning to the Night (listen to a taste here). The album drops Tuesday, July 17, in the U.S., but fans can get a sneak peek at their Olympic collaboration on Monday, July 16.

More Olympics songs will follow by alternative dance band Delphic (Monday, July 23), electronic gurus the Chemical Brothers (Monday, July 30) and rapper Dizzee Rascal (August 6). At the Games themselves, the Scissor Sisters and Rizzle Kicks will also play surprise gigs for spectators.
